Supporting Corridor Improvements Along the Lakeshore West Line

Burlington Hydro completed extensive electrical relocation and reconstruction work along the GO rail corridor to support Metrolinx’s GO Expansion program and future rail electrification. This work enabled major transportation improvements, including the Burloak Drive Grade Separation, while maintaining safety and service reliability for the community.

Project Overview

As part of corridor‑wide rail upgrades, Burlington Hydro relocated and rebuilt overhead electrical infrastructure at key locations along the Lakeshore West rail corridor. This work ensured that rail electrification could proceed safely while preparing the electrical system for long‑term changes to the corridor.

The project was delivered in close coordination with Metrolinx, EllisDon, Oakville Hydro, and municipal partners in Burlington and Oakville, and included both temporary and permanent electrical infrastructure changes.

What Work Was Completed?

Electrical Relocations and Rebuilds

Burlington Hydro crews relocated overhead electrical infrastructure to clear the rail corridor for construction. This included pole removals and installations, cable and conductor removal and replacement, and rebuilding infrastructure to match the final corridor design.

Rail Crossing and Corridor Work

Work was completed at multiple locations along the corridor, including Clarkson Road North, Balsam Avenue, and the Burloak Drive rail crossing. Activities included excavation, trenchless installations beneath rail tracks, and full site restoration once electrical work was complete.

What Work Is Currently Ongoing?

The Burloak Drive Grade Separation project is ongoing and will lower the roadway beneath the GO rail corridor, eliminating the at‑grade crossing where vehicles currently stop for trains.

To support this transformation, Burlington Hydro completed temporary electrical relocations earlier this year, allowing construction to advance safely within the rail corridor. Permanent electrical infrastructure work is planned for later this year and will rebuild the system to align with the new bridge and roadway configuration. This phased approach ensures service continuity while delivering long‑term, resilient electrical infrastructure for both Burlington and Oakville.
