Preparing the Grid for Growth Along Dundas Street

As part of Halton Region’s Dundas Street widening project, Burlington Hydro is relocating and rebuilding electrical infrastructure to support roadway expansion, new active‑transportation features, and long‑term growth across Burlington.

This required work creates an opportunity to modernize aging assets, strengthen system reliability, and prepare the electricity grid for future demand as the corridor evolves.

Project Overview

The Dundas Street widening project spans from Tremaine Road to Kerns Road and includes road expansion, new sidewalks, and cycling infrastructure. To support this work, Burlington Hydro is relocating significant overhead and underground electrical infrastructure currently located within the road allowance.

The project is being delivered in phases in close coordination with the Region of Halton, the City of Burlington, and other utilities to ensure safe, efficient construction while maintaining reliable electrical service for customers along the corridor.

What Work Is Being Done?

The project includes the relocation of approximately 10 km of primary and secondary feeders, encompassing both overhead and underground circuits. This work ensures electrical infrastructure is safely repositioned outside the widened roadway.

Relocation work involves removing and installing poles, transformers, switching cubicles, and associated equipment. Many assets are being upgraded as part of this process to improve reliability and long‑term performance.

Electrical work is closely coordinated with Halton Region and other utilities to align with road construction activities and reduce repeated disruption along the corridor. Learn more about this project on the Region of Halton’s website.

Impacts and Construction Considerations

This work may involve temporary lane restrictions, localized outages, or short‑term service interruptions as infrastructure is safely relocated. Burlington Hydro coordinates outage planning carefully and communicates directly with affected customers when interruptions are required.
