Cable injection is a targeted rehabilitation technique that repairs existing underground cable insulation rather than replacing the cable entirely. Through this pilot, Burlington Hydro assessed whether cable injection could improve reliability and delay the need for full cable replacement in select areas of the Brant Hills subdivision.
Approximately 4,980 metres of underground cable were treated as part of this pilot, within a defined target area identified through prior condition assessment and testing. The project supports Burlington Hydro’s broader strategy of using data-driven and cost-effective approaches to maintain a safe and resilient electricity system.

What Is Cable Injection?
Cable injection is a rehabilitation method that involves injecting a specialized insulating fluid into underground electrical cables. The fluid fills microscopic voids and defects within the cable insulation, helping to reduce the risk of electrical failure and improve overall cable performance.
This technique allows Burlington Hydro to address deterioration within existing cables while minimizing excavation, surface disruption, and construction impacts to the neighbourhood.
Why Brant Hills?
The Brant Hills neighbourhood includes underground electrical infrastructure that has been in service for several decades. Previous testing and condition assessments identified sections of cable that could benefit from rehabilitation.
By piloting cable injection in Brant Hills, Burlington Hydro was able to evaluate how this approach performs in a realworld residential setting and determine whether it could be applied more broadly across the system.
What Work Was Completed?
As part of the pilot, Burlington Hydro:
- Treated approximately 4,980 metres of underground cable using cable injection techniques
- Focused work within a defined target area of the Brant Hills subdivision
