The company also took its value message and re-focused it on an organization-wide campaign to shine a light on the good work of its employees – the core strength of the company’s success.

Recognizing a Healthy and Safe Workplace

Activities to promote employee health and wellness, and initiatives that encourage teamwork and innovative thinking, contribute to creating a positive and safe workplace. BHI develops and executes programs that support a preventative approach to safety where employees are empowered, accountabilities are clear, and outcomes are tied to measurable performance objectives and goals.

The Infrastructure Health & Safety Association’s (IHSA) Paths to Zero Award program recognizes a healthy and safe work environment that is achieved through strict criteria and measurement standards. It’s a four-level program based on an organization’s commitment, effort, outcomes and sustainability – relative to its safety programs and philosophy.  Organizations such as BHI who are actively enrolled in the program go through a rigorous process of achieving a specific status that, they themselves have put forward.  BHI is required to achieve the documentation requirements and go through a series of interviews before it is certified under each level.

BHI achieved both its Bronze (Commitment) and Silver (Effort) Awards in 2005 and 2007 respectively. The organization achieved a Gold (Outcomes) Award with Level One and Two completed in 2011 and 2013 respectively, Level Three early in 2014, and Level Four in 2015.

A History of Awards:

In 2011, Burlington Hydro’s acclaimed GridSmartCity initiative won top honors from the Electricity Distributors Association’s (EDA) for Public Relations Innovation.

In 2008, The Engineering Society recognized Burlington Hydro’s Switching Automation System with the Electrical Engineering Project of the Year. The system, the first of its kind in Ontario at time of installation, automatically restores power in the critical load areas in Downtown Burlington, and is a key catalyst behind reductions in the duration of outages, and gains in electricity reliability. Outages have virtually been eliminated in the Burlington core.

A subsequent phase of the Switching Automation System, which saw an expansion to 50 key installations of Intelli-Team Auto Detection and Restoration technology, secured Burlington Hydro the Electricity Distributors Association (EDA) Award for Customer Service Innovation in 2009.
