What to do in case of a power failure
- DO NOT CONTACT 911. This is intended for Fire, Police and Ambulance emergency calls only.
- Call Burlington Hydro at 905-332-1851 during office hours or 1-877-310-4937 after hours. Please bear in mind if there is a major outage, which can affect thousands of customers, the possibility of securing an open line is severely limited. Please be aware of this possibility, and assured that we are making every effort to restore service. Our operators also provide information during major outages to area radio stations.
- Keep an emergency supply kit in a convenient location which should contain the following items:
- Flashlight and batteries
- Candles and matches
- Battery-operated radio
- Never use a charcoal barbecue indoors. Charcoal emits carbon monoxide.
- To protect sensitive equipment, turn off or unplug stereo sets, television sets, microwave ovens, VCR's and personal computers. Some equipment may merit the consideration of surge protectors.
- To help reduce initial demand upon power restoration, turn off major appliances that were operating before the outage, and resume operation over a twenty minute period.
- Most frozen and refrigerated food will keep for up to twenty-four hours.
- Leave at least one light on so that you know when the power is restored.
- When power resumes, check to make sure the freezer and refrigerator are working, reset clocks, automatic timers and alarms.
