Burlington Hydro Contributes to the Operating Efficiency of Halton Regional Police Service

When Halton Regional Police Service undertook construction of a new District Station in Burlington, the designers worked with Burlington Hydro to ensure that the facility incorporated energy efficient lighting.

Through its Conservation and Demand Management Plan, Burlington Hydro provided an incentive to upgrade the efficiency of the lighting design. By incorporating energy efficiency right from the start, the Police Service and the ratepayers of Halton will realize operating cost savings for the life of the building. This amounts to $13,500 per annum.

The environment benefits as well. The electricity avoided through this upgrade reduces the draw on Ontario's electricity system by 34.4 kW. This means that the electricity generators won't need to burn fossil fuels to provide this incremental load, resulting in the avoidance of the following greenhouse gas emissions:

  • 90 Tonnes CO2
  • 400 Kg SO2
  • 85 Kg NOx

Were coal fired generators used to provide this additional electricity, 6 average-sized dump trucks of coal per year could remain buried in the ground.

These savings are enough to power about 12 average homes in the City of Burlington and illustrate the need for effective conservation efforts on the part of our community.

Burlington Hydro Inc. will be a major participant in Ontario's next generation of Conservation and Demand Management Programs, running from the summer of 2007 through to the end of 2010. Visit this site shortly to obtain further details on the following:

  • The Great Refrigerator Round-up (a program to permanently retire secondary refrigerators and freezers in an environmentally responsible way).
  • Business Incentives (a program to provide cash incentives to commercial, industrial and institutional customers to implement energy efficiency improvements).
  • Summer Savings (an opportunity for homeowners who reduce their summer electricity consumption in 2007 over 2006 by 10% or more to receive a special rebate).
  • Demand Response (a further opportunity for homeowners and small business to allow their air conditioning and electric hot water heaters to be reset by a few degrees during times of high electricity demands in the Province of Ontario).
